Google Used a Black, Deaf Worker to Tout Its Diversity. Now She’s Suing for Discrimination
Google has been under fire recently after a Black, Deaf worker who was used to promote the company’s diversity initiatives filed a lawsuit alleging discrimination. The employee, who has chosen to remain anonymous, claims that despite being held up as an example of Google’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, she faced discrimination and retaliation within the company.
The lawsuit, which was filed in federal court, alleges that the employee was subjected to harassment and mistreatment by colleagues and supervisors. This treatment allegedly included being excluded from important meetings, not receiving necessary accommodations for her disability, and being passed over for promotions and raises.
The employee’s attorney stated, “It’s a classic case of tokenism, where a company uses a minority employee as a prop to show how diverse and inclusive they are, but behind the scenes, that employee is facing discrimination and mistreatment.”
Google has not yet publicly responded to the lawsuit, but the company has faced criticism in the past for its handling of diversity and inclusion issues. In 2017, Google fired an engineer who wrote a controversial memo criticizing the company’s diversity efforts, sparking a debate about free speech and diversity in the tech industry.
